Melody in Love Is in the Earth aligns with Simmons on Root as primary, adding physical vitality, protection, and what she describes as stimulation of the adrenal function, the most medically-framed treatment of the three, and the one requiring the most careful hedging for a modern audience.

The convergence: all three identify ruby as a high-energy, activating stone. The disagreement is only about which chakra gate it enters through first. Simmons and Melody say root. Hall says heart. The honest answer, after twelve years of working with it, is that those are not competing positions. Ruby enters the root and arrives at the heart. The sequence matters.

What I have seen consistently in practice, ruby is for people who already know what they want and cannot make themselves reach for it. Not confusion, not ambiguity, paralysis in the face of a clear, known desire. The people who have done the work, identified the thing, and keep stopping just before the threshold. Ruby works best at the root. The client reclined, the stone placed at the base of the spine or held in both hands just below the navel. Fifteen minutes maximum for a first session, this is not a gentle, slow-building stone. It activates quickly and the integration period matters. Always close with grounding, I keep hematite within reach on the session table specifically for the closing sequence after ruby work. The transition from activated to grounded requires a deliberate step and ruby does not provide it on its own.

Meditation

Seated, feet flat on the floor. Ruby in both hands below the lap or placed at the base of the spine if you are working on a cushion that allows it. Set the intention before picking it up, ruby amplifies what is present, which means vague or unfocused states get amplified alongside directed ones. Know what you are working toward before the stone is in your hands. Five minutes of stillness first. Then let the session develop. The throat and heart pendant placement produces a different quality of experience than ring-on-the-right-hand, choose based on whether you are working the emotional or the action register.

Home Placement

South-facing wall or south sector of the home for fire energy and solar amplification. Office or studio rather than bedroom, ruby is activating, not restful. I keep the Mogok cabochon on the session table rather than in any other room specifically because ruby belongs where the work happens, the creative work, the intentional work, the work that requires the full self. It does not belong in spaces dedicated to rest or processing.

Ruby is not an independent mineral species. It is a gem variety of corundum (Al₂O₃), aluminum oxide, in which trivalent chromium (Cr³⁺) substitutes for aluminum (Al³⁺) in the crystal structure. Why Chromium Makes Ruby Red: The Crystal Field Mechanism

Ruby’s red color is one of the best-characterized chromophore systems in all of mineralogy. How to Identify Authentic Ruby

The ruby market contains more deception per square inch than almost any other sector of the gem trade. The combination of extreme price differentials between origin-types, widespread heat treatment, and the existence of convincing composite material creates conditions where a stone described simply as “ruby” can be any of five substantially different products. Know what you are buying.

What Is Commonly Sold as Ruby That Is Not Ruby

Red spinel: The most historically significant case. The Black Prince’s “Ruby” set in the British Imperial State Crown of England is red spinel (MgAl2O4), not corundum. Red spinel and ruby are visually indistinguishable to the naked eye and were not mineralogically differentiated by European gemologists until the late 18th century. Centuries of royal records refer to it as a “balas ruby,” balais, from Balakhshan, the Tajik-Afghan spinel-mining region where it originated, acquired by Edward the Black Prince from Pedro the Cruel of Castile in 1367. The distinction was only confirmed by modern mineralogical analysis. Red spinel is a genuine and valuable gemstone; it simply is not ruby.

Red garnet: Almandine and pyrope garnet are singly refractive red stones frequently mistaken for ruby at lower quality and price points. Both are isotropic; they show no pleochroism and no birefringence, which distinguishes them from ruby immediately under a dichroscope or polariscope.

Lead-glass-filled “composite ruby”: Heavily included, very low quality corundum with open fractures filled by high-refractive-index lead-rich glass. The treatment produces apparent clarity and adds weight to material that would otherwise be essentially worthless as a gemstone. GIA and CIBJO have issued specific warnings about these since 2003. The 2013 CIBJO conference in Tel Aviv updated acceptable terminology, “lead-glass-filled ruby,” “lead-glass-filled composite ruby,” or “composite corundum.” These are substantially different products from ordinary ruby, the lead glass filler can be damaged by common solvents, acids, steam cleaning, and even prolonged contact with skin perspiration. If a ruby is very clear, very deeply red, and priced suspiciously low, ask explicitly about glass filling. A reputable seller will tell you immediately.

Synthetic ruby: Produced since 1902 by Auguste Verneuil’s flame fusion process, chemically identical Al₂O₃:Cr, optically indistinguishable by color alone, but identifiable under 10x magnification by curved growth lines (versus straight in natural stones), gas bubbles, and the absence of natural inclusion assemblages. Hydrothermal and flux-grown synthetics are higher quality and require more sophisticated testing, they show chevron growth patterns and flux inclusions respectively. Under FTC rules, synthetic ruby must be labeled “synthetic ruby,” “laboratory-grown ruby,” or “laboratory-created ruby.”

Field Tests

The dichroscope is the single most useful field tool for ruby identification. Ruby is birefringent (trigonal crystal system); it shows two different colors under the dichroscope, purplish-red and orange-red. Red spinel shows no dichroism: it is isotropic (cubic system). Red garnet also shows no dichroism, isotropic. Glass shows no dichroism. Synthetic corundum shows the same dichroism as natural ruby, it is chemically identical. A dichroscope separates ruby from most of its commercial substitutes in thirty seconds and costs about $40. Every serious collector and practitioner should own one.

Under longwave UV (365 nm), low-iron Mogok marble-type rubies fluoresce vivid red. Thai and Cambodian basalt-type rubies show weak to inert fluorescence due to iron content. Synthetic Verneuil rubies also fluoresce vivid red. Mozambican rubies vary, moderate to weak fluorescence. A UV lamp does not distinguish natural from synthetic, but it distinguishes Mogok-type from iron-rich material and from most simulants.

The lead-glass flash test: Under UV or white light at an oblique angle, lead-glass-filled stones show a characteristic blue-purple iridescent flash from the glass-filled fractures. Natural, untreated, and heat-treated ruby show no such flash. Under 10x loupe, glass-filled fractures often show a network of gas bubbles along the fill boundary, look for rounded bubbles in what appear to be fracture planes.

Specific gravity: Natural ruby runs 3.97-4.05. Red spinel 3.58-3.70. Red garnet 3.95-4.20 (overlaps with ruby). Glass 2.5-3.5. Hydrostatic weighing is the most reliable SG method; spring balance SG estimates are less precise but still useful for comparison.

The Pigeon Blood Problem

“Pigeon blood” is a trade descriptor, not a scientifically defined gemological standard. The term refers to a specific combination of hue (pure red with a slight blue-red modifying tone), saturation (vivid), and tone (medium-dark), historically associated with Mogok material. There is no universally agreed spectrophotometric threshold. Different laboratories and dealers apply it inconsistently, and it has been appropriated for non-Mogok, heated, and even composite material. GIA and CIBJO do not recognize it as a standardized term. Treat it as a marketing description and ask for laboratory reports.

FTC and CIBJO Disclosure Requirements

Heat treatment of ruby is so pervasive and widely accepted in the industry that the FTC does not require its disclosure if it constitutes standard practice, and standard heat treatment does. The majority of commercial rubies are heat-treated to improve color and clarity by dissolving rutile silk inclusions. This is normal, accepted, and not considered deceptive. Lead-glass fracture filling is a different category, it must be disclosed as “lead-glass-filled ruby” under both FTC guidelines and CIBJO standards. Beryllium diffusion treatment, which alters color more dramatically, must also be disclosed. If a seller does not mention treatment status on a stone priced above $100, ask directly.

Cleansing & Care Instructions

Ruby is one of the most physically durable stones in existence. Mohs 9 places it second only to diamond, and unlike many high-hardness minerals, corundum has no true cleavage; there is no structural plane along which it prefers to break. The practical result is a stone you can carry daily, wear in jewelry, place anywhere, and clean without anxiety. Natural untreated ruby and heat-treated ruby are both fully water safe; corundum is chemically inert and unaffected by dilute acids, soaps, or standard cleaning agents.

  • Cleansing: Running water is safe and appropriate for untreated and heat-treated material. Brief sunlight is fine, ruby’s color is produced by Cr³⁺ ions locked into the crystal lattice, which are neither bleachable nor photodegradable. Moonlight, sound bowl, selenite slab are all appropriate. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are generally safe for untreated and heat-treated stones but should never be used on lead-glass-filled material.
  • The lead-glass exception: This is the single most important care distinction with ruby. Lead-glass-filled rubies, heavily included low-quality stones with fractures filled by high-refractive-index glass, require a completely different care approach: damp cloth only, no ultrasonic, no steam, no prolonged soap or acid contact. The glass filler can be leached and damaged by all of these. If you did not pay gemstone prices and your stone is very clear and very red with almost no inclusions, ask about treatment status before cleaning. A reputable seller discloses this.

Medieval and early modern Burmese warriors embedded rubies beneath their skin before battle, believing the gem conferred invulnerability. This practice is documented in Burmese chronicles and was recorded by European travelers in the 15th-16th centuries. Marco Polo (~1290 CE) described the ruby mines of “Balaghat,” a region he places in “Upper India,” almost certainly corresponding to the Mogok area, as producing the finest rubies in the world, and described the local king’s prohibition on exporting the finest stones, they were the property of the crown. The Carmen Lucia Ruby: Smithsonian NMNH

The finest large faceted Burmese ruby in any public collection is the Carmen Lucia Ruby, held by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. Catalog number NMNH G10320. It is a 23.10 carat oval faceted stone from the Mogok Stone Tract, Myanmar, with the intense pigeon-blood red characteristic of the best low-iron marble-type material.
