K(Li,Al)3(Si,Al)4O10(F,OH)2. Potassium in the interlayer site, lithium and aluminum sharing the octahedral positions, silicon and aluminum in the tetrahedral framework, with fluorine and hydroxyl in the anion positions. The formula looks straightforward. The actual situation is significantly more nuanced, which is part of what makes lepidolite one of mineralogy’s more interesting mica problems.

In 1998, the International Mineralogical Association reclassified “lepidolite” from a mineral species to a series name covering compositions between two valid end-member species, trilithionite and polylithionite. What this means practically is that every piece of material commercially sold as lepidolite is almost certainly either trilithionite or polylithionite, but you need microprobe analysis to determine which. The name survives the way “biotite” survives because it is genuinely useful field terminology for a compositional range that is real and recognizable, even if not technically precise. A mineralogist will never call it lepidolite in a formal publication. A collector, a dealer, and every crystal healing practitioner will use nothing else.

The lilac, pink, and purple color in most lepidolite is caused by manganese, not lithium. Lithium is colorless in this structure. The exact oxidation state of the manganese responsible, whether Mn2+ or Mn3+, remains genuinely contested in the literature. Lepidolite is exclusively a pegmatite mineral, specifically a product of the most lithium-enriched, chemically evolved end of the LCT pegmatite family. LCT stands for Lithium-Cesium-Tantalum, the trace elements that define these magmatic systems. They derive from S-type peraluminous granites in orogenic (compressional) settings, enriched in fluxing components that depress the solidus temperature and allow crystallization to continue long after most granites would be solid.
