Kunzite is the pink-to-lilac gem variety of spodumene, with a name that honors George Frederick Kunz, Tiffany and Co.’s gem expert from 1879 until his death in 1932, the most important American gemologist of the nineteenth century.

The stone was formally named by chemist Charles Baskerville in September 1903, published in Science (n.s.) 18:303, while Kunz himself was on vacation. That detail that seems appropriate for a stone others would name after a man who had spent decades making other gems famous. Malachite excavates stored material with a persistence that makes most clients deeply uncomfortable before they feel better. Kunzite does none of that. What I’ve settled on after three years of sequencing it behind malachite specifically: it only works as a closer, never an opener. Introduced too early, it softens the material before a client is ready to sit with what’s surfacing; the session feels good and doesn’t actually finish anything. Kunzite on a desk is not appropriate for all working contexts. For any work that requires sustained emotional presence with other people: therapy practices, teaching, healthcare settings where client-facing sessions happen at a desk. For work requiring competitive edge, rapid decision-making, or sustained output under pressure, kunzite is the wrong stone. Keep kunzite away from any window that receives direct light for more than an hour daily. The color loss is permanent and gradual, which means it will be far advanced before it becomes obvious. South-facing surfaces in any room are not appropriate for kunzite display. Car dashboards, outdoor altars, and any surface that receives regular UV exposure will progressively destroy the stone’s color centers regardless of the variety or origin.

The discovery sequence is specific enough to be worth getting right. In December 1902, prospector Frederick Sickler shipped pale pink spodumene from the White Queen claim on Hiriart Mountain in Pala, San Diego County, to Kunz in New York. Kunz initially suspected a new tourmaline variety.
