Popular literature consistently reports howlite’s Mohs hardness as 3.5. This figure is real but misattributed. The true crystallographic hardness of an individual howlite crystal is 6.5. Mindat’s entry notes this distinction explicitly. The commercially available howlite you will almost always encounter is the nodular massive form, so the 3.5 practical handling figure is what matters for care decisions, but understanding what that number actually means corrects a widespread misconception that Howlite is one of the softer minerals in the collection.

Howlite Formation & Origins

These crystals are a collector rarity.

The principal 20th-century commercial source was the Sterling Borax Mine, Tick Canyon, Los Angeles County, California, in the Sierra Pelona Mountains, where howlite occurred as abundant waste rock from colemanite mining, softball-sized nodules in massive quantities on mine dumps.

The currently active Rio Tinto Borax Mine (Kramer deposit), Boron, Kern County, California, the world’s largest open-pit borax operation, contains howlite as a tan nodular associated phase in its Miocene lacustrine evaporite sequence.

International deposits include the Magdalena Basin, Sonora, Mexico (La Tinaja del Oso deposit, documented in colemanite-howlite sections in drill holes from the 1972 US Borax exploration campaign); the Bigadiç District, Balikesir Province, Turkey, the world’s largest colemanite-ulexite deposit, hosted in Neogene lacustrine sediments interbedded with tuffs; and the Piskanja deposit, Jarandol Basin, Serbia (near Baljevac na Ibru), a volcanogenic-sedimentary lacustrine deposit with active development interest.

There are no confirmed howlite localities in Colorado.
