The ionic radius and charge of Ni²⁺ are incompatible with the Si⁴⁺ tetrahedral sites, and this substitution is ruled out on basic crystal-chemical grounds. Second: the color is not produced by colloidal nickel oxide (bunsenite, NiO). This model was proposed by Soviet mineralogists in the 1980s and falsified by Sachanbiński et al. The practical consequence: a dealer claiming “gem-grade chrysoprase” for a pale, washed-out piece is misrepresenting the material. The color intensity is the proxy test for nickel content that buyers can apply without laboratory equipment.

The 2025 Jiang et al. study in RSC Advances also identified a non-destructive authentication feature with practical value: a partially-split Ni-OH combination band at approximately 4330 cm⁻¹ in the near-infrared spectrum (NIR), which is unique to the willemseite-pimelite chromophore phase in chrysoprase and does not appear in dyed chalcedony or other Ni-bearing green stones. Why Chrysoprase Fades, and How to Partially Reverse It

The extent of recovery depends on how severely the stone has been dehydrated; extreme fading is irreversible, but mild fading is not. After Frederick the Great of Prussia acquired Silesia in 1763, he reserved the Szklary chrysoprase as a royal monopoly and used it in the Neues Palais at Sanssouci in Potsdam. The deposit has been mined intermittently through the 20th century with minor recent production.

The dominant modern source is the Gumigil Mine at Marlborough, central Queensland, Australia, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Rockhampton in the Rockhampton Region. Other significant deposits: Haneti and Itiso, Tanzania (active since 1986, supplying European and North American markets): Tanzanian material is generally paler and more yellow-green than Marlborough Australian chrysoprase, with lower average NiO content producing a mint or sage tone rather than the apple-green that commands the highest prices. Tanzanian stones reach the market primarily as tumbled material and lower-grade cabochons priced well below Australian equivalents; buyers encountering “natural chrysoprase” at under $5 per carat are almost certainly handling Tanzanian or Brazilian material rather than Marlborough. Sarykul Boldy, Kazakhstan (studied in Čermáková et al. 2017 alongside Szklary material); Niquelândia, Goiás, Brazil; and several California localities including the Deer Creek mine in Tulare County (documented at Mindat and operating from 1897) and the Lindsay mine in Amador County. No well-documented Colorado or Rocky Mountain primary deposit appears in the peer-reviewed literature or Mindat records.

“Australian Jade” and What It Actually Means

Chrysoprase is frequently marketed in Australia and internationally under the trade name “Australian jade” or “Queensland jade.” Both names are gemological misnomers: jade refers to nephrite (a calcium magnesium iron silicate amphibole) or jadeite (a sodium aluminum pyroxene), and chrysoprase is neither. The FTC’s guidelines on misrepresentation in gemstone sales (16 CFR §23.25–23.26) prohibit using the name of one gem species to describe another. CIBJO’s Gemstone Book similarly prohibits the practice without explicit disclosure. The trade names persist because chrysoprase has a color and translucency that superficially resembles good-quality jade, and because “Australian jade” commands a higher retail recognition than “Australian chrysoprase.” For practitioners and buyers, the honest designation is chrysoprase.

How to Identify Authentic Chrysoprase

The Main Problem: Dyed Chalcedony

The most significant authenticity challenge in the chrysoprase market is ordinary white chalcedony or agate dyed green and sold as chrysoprase. This is documented by the GIA, the International Gem Society, and geology.com (Hobart King, GIA GG), and it is a substantially larger share of the commercial market than most retail buyers realize. The color of high-quality natural chrysoprase is variable rather than uniform: deeper where the stone is thicker, paler at edges and thin sections, with subtle internal color gradients that reflect the actual distribution of nickel phyllosilicate through the microcrystalline quartz aggregate. Dyed material shows a fundamentally different color distribution: uniform across the face, concentrated at fractures and along agate banding, and often more saturated than any natural chrysoprase achieves.

Field Tests That Work

The most reliable retail-accessible test is 10× loupe inspection for dye concentration. Examine any fracture, crack, or surface feature in the stone under magnification: natural chrysoprase shows color distributed uniformly through the granular microstructure; dyed material shows pigment pooling at boundaries and along structural features. If the stone has any visible banding or agate structure, examine whether the green color follows that banding; natural chrysoprase is mineralogically uniform, not banded; if it is green where the agate band is light and different elsewhere, it is dyed chalcedony. The Chelsea filter test recommended by the Gem Association: natural Ni-colored chrysoprase stays greenish through the Chelsea filter; chromium-dyed or copper-dyed material may flash reddish. The acetone rub test (cotton swab with acetone on a hidden surface) will lift organic dye but not metallic salt dyes; it is presumptive, not definitive. Distinguishing Chrysoprase from Green Aventurine

Green aventurine is a quartzite (granular crystalline quartz rock) colored by fuchsite, a chromium-bearing muscovite mica, whose platelets produce a visible metallic sparkle called aventurescence when light catches their surfaces. Chrysoprase shows no aventurescence. Under a 10× loupe, aventurine reveals visible mica flakes; chrysoprase reveals only the fine-grained aggregate of the chalcedony. Specific gravity is similar (aventurine 2.64 to 2.69, chrysoprase 2.58 to 2.64), so heft is not a reliable distinguishing test. The visual distinctiveness of aventurescence makes this the easiest substitution to identify with a loupe and a light source.

“Lemon Chrysoprase” Is Not Chrysoprase

“Lemon chrysoprase” is a trade name for nickel-bearing magnesite, MgCO3, a trigonal carbonate mineral that can accumulate nickel substitution in the Ni-laterite environment and turn a pale to medium yellow-green as a result. It occurs in the same Western Australian deposits as genuine chrysoprase and is sometimes sold alongside it. The mineralogical differences are decisive: magnesite has a Mohs hardness of only 3.5 to 4.5 (versus 6.5 to 7 for chrysoprase) and perfect cleavage in three directions (rhombohedral). A steel fingernail scratches magnesite easily; it does not scratch chrysoprase. The two materials have different healing traditions in the practitioner community and should not be conflated.

Price as Signal

Commercial-grade tumbled chrysoprase runs $0.50 to $3 per piece at retail. Mid-grade cabochons run $3 to $20 per carat. Good-quality translucent Australian apple-green cabochons run $20 to $50 per carat. Top-grade Australian material with deep, uniform color and high translucency can reach $50 to $200 per carat or more. If a seller is offering intensely saturated, perfectly uniform green cabochons at tumbled-stone prices, one of two things is true: the material is not chrysoprase, or the quality is far lower than the description suggests. The International Gem Society describes chrysoprase as underpriced relative to its beauty and rarity; material sold at commodity prices that looks like fine chrysoprase is not fine chrysoprase.

Cleansing & Care Instructions

Chrysoprase sits at Mohs 6.5 to 7, harder than steel at approximately 6.5 and comparable to labradorite. That hardness makes it suitable for rings and everyday jewelry wear. There is no cleavage to worry about and no basal plane that can split under impact. The stone’s practical vulnerability is not mechanical but photochemical: the nano-scale nickel-bearing phyllosilicate responsible for the green color contains interlayer water, and sustained UV or heat drives that water out, distorting the nickel’s coordination geometry and fading the color. Australian Marlborough material is considered stable in normal wear. Polish Szklary material fades readily. Any chrysoprase of uncertain origin should be treated as photosensitive regardless.

  • Cleansing: Chrysoprase is chemically stable in water at ambient conditions. Brief rinsing under cool running water for thirty seconds to one minute poses no chemical risk to the silica host. Avoid hot water, steam cleaners, and ultrasonic devices: these produce localized thermal shock that can stress the microcrystalline aggregate, and in dyed material they drive pigment out of fractures. Moonlight cleansing is the preferred method for energetic reset and has zero risk to color stability. Pliny the Elder and the Classical Record

The Identification Problem: Pliny’s Stone May Not Be Ours

A 2020 paper in Neues Jahrbuch für Mineralogie by Gärtner et al. raises a problem that runs deeper than a single source correction and has not yet filtered into crystal-healing literature at all: Pliny’s “chrysoprasus” may not be modern chrysoprase. The stone Pliny describes approaches yellow, veers from peridot toward gold, and is confused with chrysolithus (likely chrysoberyl). Modern chrysoprase is distinctly apple-green, does not approach yellow in saturation, and is not confused with chrysoberyl by anyone who has handled both. Gärtner et al. conclude that Pliny’s chrysoprasus could as easily be a golden-green chrysoberyl, a yellow-green peridot, or some other stone now unknown under that name. If that is correct, then chrysoprase has no verified ancient literary history at all. Not a thin one. None. The stone called chrysoprase in Revelation 21:20 (written before Pliny, in the first century CE) may also not be the stone practitioners work with today: the Greek word chrysoprasos means only “gold-leek,” a color description that could match several stones. The medieval Bohemian use of identifiable apple-green material from the Szklary deposit remains the earliest documented use of what is unambiguously the mineral practitioners call chrysoprase today. That is a firmer foundation than a Plinian reference that Gärtner et al. have placed in genuine scholarly doubt. What this means for practitioners: the stone’s healing tradition is contemporary, built through direct encounter over the last thirty years, and that tradition is the honest authority for what it does. The invented ancient lineage it sometimes claims is not necessary and, on current evidence, not defensible.

The Story Chrysoprase Actually Carries into the Classical Period

Chrysoprase enters Western mineralogical literature in Pliny the Elder’s Naturalis Historia, completed in 77 CE, with the important caveat above that Pliny’s stone may not be the same mineral. Taking the classical sources at face value for their limited worth: Pliny describes chrysoprasus as a stone approaching the color of a leek with a gold cast, that can be made into cups and cylinders, and that should not be confused with chrysolithus, which is more golden. He assigns it no healing virtue, no moral property, and no connection to any historical figure. Theophrastus does not mention chrysoprase by name. A substantial body of crystal-healing content attributes ancient virtues and historical stories to chrysoprase based on Pliny, and the attribution is unfounded on two counts: Pliny assigns it nothing metaphysical, and Gärtner et al. (2020) have cast reasonable doubt on whether Pliny was describing this mineral at all.

The Alexander Story: Medieval, Not Ancient

The talismanic-virtue framing common in medieval lapidary tradition (where a stone’s loss “explains” a hero’s subsequent failure) is worth understanding as a genre, since it recurs across most gemstone folklore from this period and isn’t unique to chrysoprase. What’s more useful for a practitioner today than debunking any single legend is recognizing the pattern: stories assigning stones to famous historical figures are almost always retrospective morality tales, not contemporaneous reports. The Karlštejn and Saint Vitus material discussed above is the rarer case, documented, dated, architecturally verifiable, and is a better anchor for sourcing claims about chrysoprase’s history than any of the figure-attribution legends still circulating in retail copy.

Charles IV, Bohemian Gothic, and the Documented Medieval Record

The most verifiable and historically significant pre-modern use of chrysoprase is architectural, not legendary. Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia from 1346 to 1378, oversaw two of the most ambitious lapidary decoration programs in European medieval history. The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas at Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague, designed by the master mason Petr Parléř and completed around 1373, has walls inlaid with more than 1,300 polished semiprecious stones (jasper, amethyst, carnelian, agate, and chrysoprase) set in gilded stucco.
