One drop of dilute (5 to 10%) hydrochloric acid on a fresh calcite surface produces immediate, vigorous effervescence: CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H2O + CO2. The entire drop erupts with visible bubbling. This is the fastest, most reliable field test for identifying calcite and distinguishing it from similar minerals. Dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) produces only a weak, slow reaction with cold dilute acid on an unbroken surface. The vigor distinguishes them. Test on an inconspicuous spot; acid damages the surface. Place a clear, transparent calcite specimen on printed text. Two copies of every letter should be visible. This is the double refraction produced by calcite’s extreme birefringence (0.172). Many calcite specimens fluoresce brilliantly under UV light. The primary activator is manganese (Mn2+), which produces vivid orange to red glow under both shortwave and longwave UV. The Franklin and Sterling Hill deposits in New Jersey produce some of the most famous fluorescent calcite in the world: intense red calcite alongside green willemite and blue hardystonite, a combination found nowhere else on Earth. Pink and blue fluorescing calcite specimens are also well documented. “Caribbean calcite” is a trade name, not a mineralogical designation. It does not come from the Caribbean.
