Why We Started This Site
Ever bought a “crystal” online only to realize it’s dyed glass? Or read somewhere that amethyst “cures anxiety” and wondered if that’s actually true?
Yeah, we’ve been there too, as we’ve been making our way through the hectic world of crystals for the better part of almost 2 decades.
That’s why CrystalDatabase exists. We wanted a place where you could learn about crystals without the BS, where spiritual wisdom meets actual geological facts, and nobody’s trying to sell you miracle cures or fake stones.
Whether you’re here because you felt drawn to a specific crystal, you’re building a collection, or you just think minerals are cool—welcome. You’re in the right place.
What Makes Us Different
We Don’t Pick Sides
Some sites treat crystals purely as pretty rocks. Others make wild claims. We do neither.
Here’s our approach: crystals have been used in spiritual and healing practices for thousands of years across countless cultures. Those traditions matter. People’s experiences matter. But we’re also not going to pretend there’s peer-reviewed evidence that rose quartz scientifically “heals heartbreak.”
We explore spiritual properties and traditional uses while giving you accurate geological information. You get both perspectives, clearly labeled, so you can decide what resonates with you.
Geological Accuracy Matters
Every mineral fact on this site, crystal formation, hardness ratings, chemical composition, and how to identify fakes, is fact-checked by a team member with a geology degree from a Canadian university.
That means when we say “amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale,” or “citrine is often heat-treated amethyst,” or “this is how you spot a fake moldavite,” we have done our due diligence to verify this fact against actual geological science.
Meet the Founder
Jonathan Thompson
I’ve been working with crystals for over a decade, and honestly, my journey started like a lot of people’s. I walked into a crystal shop, felt inexplicably drawn to the crystals, and thought, “Okay, what’s this about?”
That curiosity led me deep into energy practices, meditation with crystals, and studying how different spiritual traditions have worked with stones throughout history. I’ve built crystal grids, cleansed more selenite than I can count, and spent way too much money on pieces that “just called to me” (we’ve all been there).
But here’s what bothered me: so much crystal content online was either pure woo-woo with zero facts, or cold geology that ignored why people actually connect with these stones. I wanted something that honored both sides.
What I bring to CrystalDatabase:
- Hands-on experience with traditional crystal healing practices and energy work
- Research into traditional uses across various spiritual and cultural traditions
- Active participation in the crystal community
- A genuine love for these stones (and a slightly out-of-control personal collection)

What I don’t do:
- Make medical claims or pretend crystals replace healthcare
- Guarantee specific outcomes (your experience with crystals is your own)
All the spiritual and metaphysical content here comes from my personal practice and research from speaking with and surverying some very intelligent individuals in the crystal space. But I’m not a geologist, so every geological fact gets checked by someone who actually studied this stuff in school.
Our Team Approach
Geological Fact-Checking
We have a team member with a geology degree from a Canadian university who verifies all our mineral information. They ensure accuracy in:
- Mineral identification and classification
- Physical properties (hardness, cleavage, crystal systems, chemical composition)
- Formation processes and geological origins
- How to spot fakes, treatments, and synthetics
- Safety warnings (toxic minerals, water-soluble stones, proper handling)

Editorial & Research
Our editorial team creates buying guides, beginner resources, and practical content that helps you navigate the crystal world confidently. We research suppliers, compile comprehensive guides, and test recommendations before we share them.
